UPDATE: Hagel Confirmation Blocked by GOP

UPDATE: Hagel confirmation blocked, Senate likely to push it to close after next week’s recess! Fax the U.S. Senate: tell them to OPPOSE Hagel’s confirmation!

Conservative American,

The Senate today voted to close the Hagel nomination, advancing the agenda they originally planned to take up tomorrow, and failed.

GOP members blocked cloture demanding more time to review the nominee.

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul  said,

“[I] voted to not end debate on the Hagel nomination. I do not believe Sen. Hagel has adequately explained his activities and their financing since he left the Senate, and I believe this criteria is especially important when dealing with the revolving door between government and the private sector.”

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid claims that Republican opposition is to be blamed on the “Tea Party” rather than the fact that Hagel is not the right man for the job. Reid said today,

“Watching Republicans with otherwise distinguished records on national security place their desire to please the Tea Party ahead of doing the right thing for our troops is one of the saddest spectacles I have witnessed in my twenty-seven years in the Senate.”

Our calls, messages, and faxes are working! Today’s GOP-block stands as proof.

However, the fight is not yet over — we must continue to demand our elected leaders to oppose Hagel’s confirmation! They must vote against Hagel in the coming up-down vote!

Take Action and Demand the Senate to OPPOSE Hagel’s confirmation. Send Faxes to EVERY SENATOR and tell them that Hagel is unfit to serve as the Secretary of Defense!

Chuck Hagel is not the man to take the position of Defense Secretary because he is not for America First.

Both sides admit that as a Senator Mr. Hagel had an unusual voting history in regards to issues of American Foreign Policy. This is to say that it was not unusual to see his votes out of step with not only the GOP, but also liberals like Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, and John Kerry.

While atypical voting can often be a good thing, it seems that Hagel’s vote patterns have signaled otherwise; his voting record suggests he has an “Others First” foreign policy – a philosophy that should
never be held by anyone in the U.S. government, especially not the Defense Secretary.

Take Action and Demand the Senate to OPPOSE Hagel’s confirmation. Send Faxes to EVERY SENATOR and tell them that Hagel is unfit to serve as the Secretary of Defense!

* Also, use our Congressional Directory to call Senate offices! Select Here.

Hagel’s lack of transparency during the initial Senate subcommittee vetting process is also a cause for alarm.

Mr. Hagel claimed to have given
hundreds of speeches, yet he only turned in four transcripts to the Armed Services Committee for review. During the January 27 hearing, Sen. Ted Cruz noted that Hagel had given at least nine in 2012 alone!

The question is: where are these hundreds of speeches and why are they being withheld?

Perhaps the area of greatest concern is Hagel’s numerous foreign ties.

Not only has Iran endorsed Hagel, but GOP Senators believe that he has received a great deal of funding from several foreign individuals, organizations, and nations.

While some information has been disclosed, Hagel’s financial-backers are still quite unknown. This is to say, we don’t really know who is behind him outside of our borders.

(We do know, though, that Hagel has come to the defense of terrorist organizations like Hezbollah and Hamas.)

The Senate
must oppose the foreigners-backed Chuck Hagel from becoming the Pentagon’s chief officer!

There is still time to blast faxes to Senators…

Take Action and Demand the Senate to OPPOSE Hagel’s confirmation. Send Faxes to EVERY SENATOR and tell them that Hagel is unfit to serve as the Secretary of Defense!

* Also, use our Congressional Directory to call Senate offices! Select Here.

Republican Senators of the Armed Services Committee have sincerely opposed the confirmation of Chuck Hagel as Defense Secretary, and for good reason.

Senators
Mike Lee (R-Ut), Ted Cruz (R-Tx), and James Inhofe (R-Ok) have led the charge against a Hagel-led Pentagon. Consider these powerful statements…

Sen. Lee’s statement after the Senate Armed Forces Committee narrowly confirmed Hagel on Tuesday:

“Senator Hagel’s record on the issues most important to our national security is weak and his positions are dangerous. It is the long-standing foreign policy of the United States to not negotiate with terrorists. Hezbollah is the best-funded, best-organized, and best-equipped Foreign Terrorist Organization in the world. Yet Senator Hagel has called for direct talks between the United States and Hezbollah and Hamas. In addition, Senator Hagel’s call for enormous cuts to the U.S. nuclear arsenal is dangerous and shortsighted…

“In addition, Senator Hagel has complied only with the bare minimum required by the committee regarding certain funding sources for his activities, although there are still many troubling questions. Instead of following precedents set by other top level cabinet nominees, Senator Hagel has chosen to set up roadblocks.”

Sen. Cruz wrote in his Politico op-ed:

“In my view, peace through strength has always been the wisest course for our nation. And the principal job of the Defense secretary is to help provide a credible threat to deter those who would seek to harm U.S. national security.

Hagel’s nomination has been publicly celebrated by the Iranian government – surely an occurrence without precedent for a nominee for secretary of Defense. And Iran’s belief that Hagel will not stand against their acquiring nuclear weapons capacity makes it more likely they will charge ahead, which makes it more likely the United States will be drawn into military combat.

I hope that senators in both parties will examine his record closely; as for me, this is a nomination I cannot support.”

Sen. Inhofe warned during the January 27 confirmation meeting:

“[Hagel] voted against a resolution designating Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps – a group responsible for the killing of American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan – a terrorist organization … Senator Hagel has also been an outspoken supporter of nuclear disarmament and the Global Zero Movement. At a time when North Korea’s belligerent actions threaten our allies with their nuclear capabilities, the security of our own nation and that of our allies requires us to be vigilant with our own nuclear weapons and defense systems.”

With this evidence considered, the Senate must block Hagel’s confirmation tonight.

While Mr. Hagel should be honored for his past service in the U.S. military – he is a decorated Vietnam veteran – he should not be made the Defense Secretary.

Considering his lack of transparency during Senate hearings, his “Others First” philosophy, and his record for defending terrorist groups, the U.S. Senate
must prevent him from leading the United States military.

Send Faxes to EVERY SENATOR and tell them that Hagel is unfit to serve as the Secretary of Defense!

Stop being so willfully blind and allowing these true "Others Firsters" to make utter fools out of their conservative backers! The dual allegiance of these people has never been in doubt or hidden.

What kind of upside down world are we living in when a conservative senator with an impeccable service record being considered for Secretary of Defense is chided for not placing the interests of a foreign nation above our own, and having to witness his conservative bona fide being challenged by a panel of chickenhawk former "friends" for the unpardonable crime of having been insufficiently deferential to that foreign country in the past?

How far down do we still need to go before we hit bottom?!

Senator Hagel served our country honorably all his life and is a dyed-in-the-wool America-First conservative. For all the Israel-Firsters in Congress, from both the right and the left, to accuse this man of being an "Others First" sellout is the epitome of Chutzpah!

When are real conservatives going to wake up to the fact that Neo-conservatives are not conservatives at all, but usurpers of the conservative cause? Their agenda does not always coincide with the best interest of our country, much less the interest of the conservative electorate. The hold enjoyed by this small but powerful political group on our foreign policy has been a disaster for our nation, and conservative movement in particular (just look at the election results).

It's interesting. I don't see Israel referenced once in this article?? (Not that that would neccesarily be bad.) I think Hagel is mysterious, and while I DO agree that he may stay of the business of the rest of the world WHICH SEEMS LIKE A GOOD IDEA, I don't know why vetting his candidacy is a problem? I supported Ron Paul who is not for foreign entanglements, but I doubt Ron Paul was receiving money from foreign terror groups like Hagel may have. No, we don't need an empire, but we also don't need the leader of the Pentagon to be backed by someone else's government.

@NewYorkRobert

Sirs,

Chuck Hagel's nomination should NOT be opposed.

As Conservatives, I would expect you to support that candidate who is not interested in foreign entanglements.

YOU SUCK!
